The Sant Jordi Rock Palace Hostel has to be the coolest hostel in Barcelona. For music lovers, this is a creatively designed mecca. Each floor is themed with a different musical moment throughout history.

As a music journalist myself, meaning I am basically a professional music nerd, I couldn’t wait to stay at Rock Palace during my trip to Barcelona. Check out my honest review of Sant Jordi Rock Palace Hostel below.

Checking In

Arriving at Sant Jordi Rock Palace Hostel, you are greeted by the worlds most colourful reception. Even though I arrived quite late in the evening, the desk was manned by friendly members of staff ready to help get me checked in and settled.

Upon check-in, you need to pay a 10 euro deposit for your room key, so it’s handy to remember to bring this along with you. If you forget though not to worry as there is an ATM a short walk away.

In the reception area, there are posters detailing all the awesome hostel led activities on offer, which I will go into more detail on later in this review.

All in all, checking in was a great experience. I was made to feel instantly welcome by the lovely staff and was given some great information on visiting local sights. Staff informed me about the things going on in the hostel during the weekend so I wouldn’t miss out and was even showed up to my room and taught how to use the key card operated room lockers.

Dorm Rooms

The dorm rooms at Rock Palace were fantastic. Staying at hostels it can be so hit and miss in regards to the quality and amenities offered. At Sant Jordi Rock Palace, however, you will be happy to know everything you need for a great stay in Barcelona is provided.

The two things I loved the most about the dorm rooms were the lockers and the bed setups. Each bed number has a corresponding locker that is spacious enough to fit in all of your essentials. I find when I travel I often either forget or lose my travel padlock. Good news is here you won’t need one. The lockers are operated using your room key card, result!

What I loved about the bed set-up’s was the fact you have a little shelf, with your own plug socket. This means you can keep items you need on the shelf, such as a bottle of water and a book. The fact that you have your own plug socket is hostel luxury. Being able to charge your phone and other gadgets ready for a hectic day of sightseeing is a very important factor.

The rooms are spacious and decorated modernly, and the beds are comfortable to sleep in. There are several different dorm room sizes available to choose from. The larger dorms have 14, 12 or 8 beds. The smaller room sizes accommodate 4 or 6 sleepers.

I stayed in the 4 bedroom dorm room and really enjoyed how quiet and relaxing the room was as I am definitely a fan of a good nights sleep.

Common Areas

First up, the huge kitchen and dining area with the adjoining party central common room, The Caravan Club, on the bottom floor of the hostel. When I say huge, this really is no understatement. This is the heart of the hostel and the perfect place to meet fellow travellers and have a couple of beers.

As I’ll mention later in this review, on most nights the hostel puts on big communal meals, which honestly was the best way to meet people. Heading down to this huge common room in the evenings was a lot of fun and everyone was so lovely, even offering me some of their beer they had stashed in the fridge. Free beer and good chats, what more could you ask for?

Next up is the roof terrace, which really is just on another level. Up here you will certainly be wowed by the swimming pool, it is lush! The terrace is also decked out with lounge chairs too, so the perfect place to get a fun evening of partying started. The pool is open from April to October. Sadly I visited in November, which meant no pool for me, it was far too chilly anyhow. I guess that’s just an excuse for me to return in the summer months.

Lastly, there’s a super cosy lounge area with comfy bean bags. They are underneath the stunning stained glass windows, which gives out a nice colourful glow. If partying isn’t so much your thing, or if you need to take some time to relax, catch up from friends back home, or like me, get some writing done, well this is the perfect spot. On the walls, you will also see some seriously epic guitars, including a Flying V which I had my eye on.

Food and Drink

As I briefly touched on, the huge downstairs common room is the place to go for food and drink. Most nights of the week the hostel hosts a big communal evening meal that you can pay to take part in. During my trip, we had a curry night, pasta night and my favourite, a Paella night. All with drinks included (imagine me trying to drink my body weight in Sangria and there’s your mental image.)
Taking part is super affordable, for example, the Paella and sangria night was only €7. You’d honestly be hard pushed to find a better deal than that in Barcelona. The best part about these meals, however, is the social aspect.

The hostel also serves breakfast every day between 8:30 am – 10:30 am, for €3.50. The continental breakfast is a mix of cereals, croissants, juice and hot drinks.

Sant Jordi Rock Palace is kitted up with so many awesome facilities, it puts a lot of hostels to shame.

First up, let’s talk bathrooms. This is often the bane of any hostel stay for me. So many places can get it so wrong, with bad cleanliness, lack of space and bad layout. However, let’s take a minute to praise Sant Jordi. Their bathrooms are everything you have ever wanted from a hostel bathroom.

The massive multi shower rooms are gender split and have separated shower areas that are lockable, with pegs on the walls to keep your belongings dry. There is a huge mirror that stretches across each bathroom, meaning plenty of space to get ready.

To top it all off, you’ll find a built-in hairdryer! No need to bring your own and it doesn’t require coins either. So many times I’ve travelled, I’ve had to leave for the day with a mess of wet curly hair resembling the girl from The Ring. It was nice to be able to leave for the day to explore Barcelona with dry hair – I honestly don’t ask for much.

The hostel also offers a laundry service, a computer room, free wi-fi and free maps on check-in.

There are various different options available at Sant Jordi Rock Palace which is good for different budgets. It is worth noting that prices do increase during the summer months as this is when Barcelona is in the peak tourism season. This hostel can also book up pretty quickly so it is worth making a booking in advance. For a cheaper stay, consider visiting in the offseason. I visited in November and still had an incredible time in Barcelona.

Check the prices below to give you an idea of the costs per night to stay at Rock Palace.

  • 10-bed dorm €15.90 per night
  • 14-bed mixed dorm – €33 per night
  • 6-bed mixed dorm €35 – per night
  • 4-bed mixed dorm €45 – per night

Social and Activities

One thing Sant Jordi Rock Palace knows how to do is make guests welcome, and show them a fun time! Honestly, I have to say that Rock Palace was up there for me as one of the best social hostels I have stayed in throughout the whole of Europe.

Not only have they created an environment that promotes guests meeting each other and being sociable, but the activities and events they put on just add to this. The staff that lead each event are so lovely and helpful, and you can tell they are really enjoying their jobs.

As mentioned previously, the hostel puts on group meals most days. After the meals, however, is when the party really kicks in. After dinner arranged hostel trips to local bars and Barcelona nightlife spots take place.
I did take part in these and had such an amazing time doing so. On one of the evenings, however, I and some fellow guests made a pre hostel night out stop at a local bar recommended by one lad who used to study in Barcelona. We did later join up with the rest of the hostel for a hilarious evening out.

Those staying at the hostel can also take part in a free walking tour leaving daily from Plaça de l’Ángel in the Gothic quarter (Jaume I metro stop).

There are also other activities put on by the hostel that you’ll find advertised in the reception area. during my stay this included yoga.

Top Tips

  • Do take part in the evening meals and bar crawls – Its the best way to meet people.
  • Don’t worry about plug sockets. Your bed will have its own, result!
  • Do Chat with the staff – they are super friendly and have lots of great advice.
  • Do take pictures of all the cool rock music art and memorabilia – it’ll make your insta pop.

Sant Jordi Rock Palace hostel is in a fab location. Its easily accessible by public transport, which really made coming and going with all my luggage easy and not a painful experience which it sometimes can be.
From the airport, all you need to do is take the aerobus to the final stop, Plaza Catalunya. From there it is just a 12-minute walk to Rock Palace Hostel.

Univeritat underground station is less than a 10-minute walk from the hostel.

Nearby, you will find lots of awesome places to eat, drink and shop. I enjoyed having breakfast at local coffee shops during my stay in Barcelona. Within a few minutes walk from the hostel, you will find Granier pans artesans and Il Caffe di Francesco which I recommend. Also for a great healthy brunch, check out nearby Flax&Kale.

To walk from Sant Jordi Rock Palace to Las Rambla only takes 15 minutes, and to reach La Sagrada Familia from the hostel by walking will take just 25 minutes.

Check out my itinerary to make the most of your time in Barcelona.

A quick shout out to Sant Jordi Hostels for organising my stay in Barcelona. As always all opinions and thoughts are entirely my own.
